What is a Will?

A will is a legal document you create that sets out instructions for who will inherit your estate and what should happen after you die.

It can be a useful source of much needed funds to help in your retirement OR it can be the recipe for disaster.

Some of the reason as to why it is important to make a will

  1. If you die without a will, there are certain rules which will state how the monies, property or possessions should be distributed. You may not have wished for this to take place this way.

  2. Unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a will. Therefore, the death of one partner may create serious problems including financial for the remaining partner.

  3. Where there are children, you will need to make a will so that arrangements for the children can be made should any parent or both die.

  4. You may reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if you take advice in advance and a will is made.

  5. Change of circumstances-i.e , if you have separated and/or your ex-partner resides with someone else, you may want to change your will.

  6. If you are married orenter into a registered civil partnership. Be aware that this would make any will made previous invalid.

If you do not prepare a Will properly, it may not be valid. If you die without a Will, your estate will be distributed according to strict rules.
